With the rise of AI, the competition for college admissions has become fiercer than ever—especially for students in STEAM fields. How to plan effectively and showcase unique strengths has become a core concern for both parents and students.

On August 27, iSTEAM Academy and Vinci STEAM co-hosted an online seminar featuring former Brown University admissions officer David Mersion, who shared valuable insights with over 50 parents and students. Many pressing questions about the application process were answered with professional guidance.
1️⃣ Soft skills are the real “hard currency”

Grades are no longer the only standard. Top universities value:
* Academic breadth: excelling in both STEM and humanities
* Genuine passion: demonstrated through projects and hands-on experience
* Interdisciplinary thinking: blending technology with social issues
2️⃣ Competitions = training grounds for real skills

Through Vinci programs and participation in competitions such as VEX V5, VEX IQ, VEX AI Robotics, USACO, and USAAIO, students gain far more than awards:
🤝 Teamwork & Leadership Robotics competitions require collaboration under pressure—students learn to divide tasks, communicate, and lead teams toward shared goals.
💡 Problem-Solving Skills From designing robots to tackling complex algorithms, students develop full-cycle thinking: defining problems, analyzing, iterating, and testing solutions.
📒 Project Management Detailed engineering notebooks document the process from analysis to optimization, proving students’ ability to manage projects, follow processes, and reflect critically.
🗣️ Communication & Presentation Defending ideas and presenting solutions are crucial. Clear articulation of designs, strategies, and contributions trains students to stand out in academic defenses and interviews—exactly the “hidden strengths” admissions officers look for.
3️⃣ Community service: authenticity matters most

Admissions officers emphasize that impactful service doesn’t need to be grand.
* Small, local projects often show greater impact
* Service doesn’t need to force STEM connections—genuine care speaks louder
* Using technical skills to give back to the community is a powerful bonus
🌱 If you also want your child to:
✅ Build a competitive STEAM application profile
✅ Gain real-world robotics & programming experience
✅ Engage in meaningful community projects
iSTEAM Academy’s volunteer programs are now open for registration! Opportunities include volunteering in special education programs and robotics competitions. Each activity comes with official service hour certificates from iSTEAM, which can count toward prestigious recognitions such as the Congressional Award.
