Program Description

Course Details: • Name: MATE ROV Underwater Robotics • Date: October 4, 2025 – June 28, 2026 • Time: Saturdays, 2:00 PM – 5:00 PM • Location: Vinci Burlington/Vinci Newton/Online Classroom • Grades: G7+ • Prerequisite: None Course Description This course introduces students to the exciting world of marine robotics through the MATE ROV Competition framework. Students will work in teams to design, build, and operate a Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) capable of performing tasks inspired by real-world challenges in ocean exploration, offshore engineering, and environmental science. Throughout the course, students will learn the fundamentals of mechanical, electrical, and software engineering as applied to underwater robotics. They will gain hands-on experience in CAD design, buoyancy and propulsion systems, sensor integration, programming control systems, and mission strategy. The course emphasizes teamwork, problem-solving, project management, and technical communication—skills essential for success in STEM careers. Students will prepare for and participate in the MATE ROV Competition, where they will test their ROVs in mission scenarios, present engineering documentation, deliver technical presentations, and showcase their marketing displays to industry professionals. Learning Outcomes: By the end of this course, students will be able to: Design and Build a fully functional ROV with integrated mechanical, electrical, and software systems. Operate and Program an ROV to successfully complete mission tasks under competition conditions. Apply Engineering Principles to solve authentic, ocean-related problems using robotics. Collaborate Effectively within a multidisciplinary team to manage complex projects. Communicate Professionally through written technical reports, oral presentations, and visual marketing displays. Demonstrate Innovation and Critical Thinking by adapting designs and strategies to overcome technical challenges.
